Cubes Cape TownCUBES Cape Town is a public sector partnership whose purpose is to catalyze local action and debate regarding the role that biodiversity conservation can play in social development and the alleviation of poverty.  It is to achieve this by: 

  1. serving as a knowledge hub, both thematically and institutionally
  2. actively promoting linkages between social and ecological issues
  3. facilitating development of action-based, multi-disciplinary projects working at the interface of poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation; and
  4. providing technical support where possible to existing initiatives, programs and projects.
The thematic focus of CUBES Cape Town is on the interface beeen environmental conservation and poverty alleviation in the urban context.

CUBES Cape Town links to the global CUBES programme; an initiative of UNESCO’s Ecological Sciences Division and the Earth Institute at Columbia University, New York, on biosphere and society. CUBES Cape Town participated in Urban Nature SA 2005 on 14 and 15 September in Cape Town. This workshop on urban biodiversity conservation was coordinated by the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and the City of Cape Town.
